Paver Blocks Test

Paver blocks, commonly rectangular but available in various shapes, offer a durable and long-lasting paving solution when properly designed and maintained. Their interconnected installation provides excellent resistance to slipping and sliding, making them ideal for a wide range of applications, including parking lots, bay areas, low-volume traffic roads, city streets, and lanes. Modern advancements in construction techniques and materials have resulted in paver blocks strong enough to withstand even heavy traffic loads.

To ensure the quality and performance of paver blocks, the following essential tests in accordance with IS 15658:2021 are conducted.

Paver Blocks Test

a)   Compressive Strength Test

This test is performed to determine the load-bearing capacity of the paver blocks. The Indian standard specifies minimum compressive strength and thickness requirements based on traffic conditions. For heavy traffic, the minimum specified compressive strength is 50 N/mm², and the minimum thickness is 100 mm.

b)   Abrasion Test

The resistance of paver blocks to surface wear caused by traffic movement is assessed using Dorry’s abrasion testing machine. This is crucial for predicting the service life of the pavement.

c)   Water Absorption Test

This test helps to understand the internal structure and porosity of the paver blocks. Higher water absorption indicates a more porous structure, which can potentially affect strength. As per IS 15658:2021, the desired water absorption after 28 days of curing should be less than 7% for individual blocks.
