Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a crucial aspect of engineering services for both new and existing structures. For new constructions, NDT primarily serves as a quality control measure and helps resolve any uncertainties regarding the quality of materials or workmanship. When applied to existing structures, NDT plays a vital role in evaluating their structural integrity and adequacy.
Importantly, these tests are generally conducted without causing damage to the concrete. Through NDT, a wide array of concrete properties, including density, elastic modulus, strength, surface hardness, absorption characteristics, and the location, size and depth of reinforcement can be determined. NDT services include:
a) Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test
This non-destructive technique allows us to assess the quality of concrete on-site by measuring the velocity of ultrasonic pulses transmitted through the concrete between transducers. The procedures outlined in IS 516 Part 5 Sec 1: 2018 are followed.
b) Rebound Hammer Test
This method provides a rapid and convenient indication of the compressive strength of concrete without causing damage. The objectives of this test are:
The procedures outlined in IS 516 Part 5 Sec 4: 2020 are followed.
